Request a QuoteWhat Is a Rebar Shot Blasting Machine?
A rebar shot blasting machine is a through-feed automatic derusting machine for deformed bars, round bars and wire rod. Buyers also search for a steel bar derusting machine or a wire rod shot blasting machine. Centrifugal turbines throw steel shot onto the bar surface. Rust, mill scale and weld slag are removed in one pass. The steel is cleaned and uniformly roughened.

Why does construction rebar need shot blast derusting?
Rebar accumulates mill scale, rust and oil during rolling, storage and transport. These contaminants reduce the steel-concrete bond. Chinese standard GB 50204 requires rebar surfaces free of granular or flaky old rust. This rebar rust removal machine solves four problems at once:
- Complete derusting — shot impact strips mill scale and rust, reaching Sa2.5 cleanliness.
- Higher bond strength — a uniform micro anchor profile increases adhesion to concrete.
- Surface preparation — shot blasting removes rust and scale and creates a uniform profile for coating.
- Clean and compliant — no chemical waste liquid, no acid fumes, shot recirculated.
This is not only our claim. Peer-reviewed research in Journal of Building Engineering and ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction has compared derusting methods on the bond between steel bar and concrete, with shot blasting tested against chemical rust removers. Ervin, the European abrasive supplier, lists rebar production among the standard applications for shot blasting. Contractors also clean bar by wire brushing and high-pressure water, but neither cleans nor creates the uniform profile produced by shot blasting in a single continuous pass.
How does a rebar shot blasting machine work?
This rebar pass through shot blasting machine runs continuously. Six stages:
- Loading — rebar feeds at constant speed into the sealed chamber on rollers.
- High-speed throwing — 2 to 6 turbines run at 2200–3200 r/min, throwing shot at 60–100 m/s.
- Impact cleaning — dense shot strips scale, rust and weld slag, forming uniform roughness.
- Shot recirculation — a screw conveyor, bucket elevator and air-wash separator return usable shot.
- Dust collection — a pulse-jet cartridge collector keeps emission at ≤120 mg/m³.
- Unloading — high-pressure air blows off residual shot; bars discharge automatically.
What does rebar shot blasting achieve?
- Derusting and descaling — mill scale, rust, weld slag and oil.
- Surface roughening — a uniform anchor profile for coatings and concrete.
- Surface strengthening — compressive residual stress raises fatigue life.
- Lower cost — recirculated shot; several tonnes per hour per machine.
Beyond rebar, the same steel section and plate shot blasting equipment handles H-beams, angle steel, tubes and plates. A steel bar descaling machine configuration also serves round bar and wire rod mills.
Which abrasive media is best for rebar shot blasting?
| Media | Hardness (HRC) | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire cut shot | 40-50 | Cylindrical with edges | Highest derusting efficiency and longest life; heavy rust and mill scale |
| Cast steel shot | 40-50 | Spherical | Moderate impact, finer finish; light to medium rust and scale |
| Steel grit | 55-60 | Angular | Strong cutting action; heavy mill scale and high-roughness requirements |
Recommended mix: blend wire cut shot with cast steel shot for standard rebar derusting. Use 1.0–2.0 mm for heavy rust; 0.8–1.2 mm suits light rust.
Wire rod lines are a special case. Because the bar is thin and the line runs fast, fine high-carbon shot around 0.2–0.3 mm is used instead, so the surface is cleaned without deforming the wire. Tell us which material you run and we specify the media.
Which shot blasting machines cannot handle rebar?
Rebar is long and slender, so three machine types fail:
| Machine type | Why it does not work |
|---|---|
| Tumble belt blaster | Long bars tangle, stack and jam inside the belt |
| Drum blaster | Built for small batch parts; rebar far exceeds the drum |
| Hanger type blaster | Intermittent processing; hanging long bars is impractical and slow |
Two further cases need a different configuration rather than a different machine class. Wire in coil form is normally descaled as a whole coil in a batch coil blaster before drawing; our continuous line handles straightened or drawn wire. Bundled bar needs a wider chamber and a non-standard roller layout, so specify it at enquiry stage.
Which machine is correct for rebar?
For long continuous profiles, the right choice is a through-feed roller conveyor rebar shot blasting machine:
- Roller conveyor feeds while bars rotate — 360° all-round shot coverage.
- Line integration runs at up to 240 m/min.
- As a deformed bar shot blasting machine, it handles round bar and wire rod from Ø5 to 130 mm.
- Sealed chamber keeps shot in and dust emission compliant.
Turbine layouts and conveyor options are listed on the product page. Non-standard widths suit bundled bar.
What Are the Technical Parameters?
Two configurations cover most enquiries. The bar and rebar line handles large diameters at moderate speed; the wire rod line handles thin wire at high speed and synchronises with a drawing or take-up machine.
| Parameter | Bar and rebar line | Wire rod line |
|---|---|---|
| Material diameter | Ø5–130 mm deformed bar, round bar, sections | Ø4–16 mm wire rod |
| Feed speed | Up to 240 m/min in line integration | 60 m/min or less, synchronised with drawing or take-up machine |
| Blast wheels | 2–6 turbines at 2200–3200 r/min | 4 units, 22 kW each, variable frequency |
| Blast wheel capacity | Set to diameter and target grade | 4 × 280 kg/min |
| Abrasive velocity | 60–100 m/s | Set to wire diameter |
| Abrasive | Steel shot or wire cut shot 0.8–2.0 mm | High-carbon steel shot 0.2–0.3 mm, initial load approx. 3200 kg |
| Elevator capacity | Set to output | 90 t/h at 4 kW |
| Separator | Air-wash type, shot recirculated | 45 t/h at 4–5 m/s air speed |

Rebar shot blasting machine buyer FAQ
What derusting grade does rebar shot blasting achieve?
With wire cut shot and correct parameters, Sa2.5 is achieved consistently. That meets GB 50204: no granular or flaky old rust. For heavy rust, specify steel grit or higher turbine power.
Does shot blasting improve the bond between rebar and concrete?
Yes. Blasting forms a uniform micro anchor profile and removes the scale and rust that block adhesion. Concrete contacts the steel directly and locks mechanically. Bond strength rises, reducing hollowing and rust-jacking cracks. Published research comparing derusting methods on bar-to-concrete bond includes shot blasting among the mechanical methods tested.
What is a TMT bar shot blasting machine?
TMT means thermo-mechanically treated bar, the standard name for deformed rebar in India and South Asia. A TMT bar shot blasting machine is the same through-feed roller conveyor machine described on this page, specified for the ribbed surface and diameter range of TMT bar.
How fast does a rebar shot blasting machine run?
Roller feed reaches up to 240 m/min in line integration, set by rust severity and target cleanliness. Output is several tonnes per hour. Wire rod lines run at up to 60 m/min synchronised with the drawing or take-up machine.
What bar diameters can be processed?
Standard models cover 5–130 mm deformed bar, round bar and wire rod. Wire rod lines are built for 4–16 mm. Larger diameters or bundled bars need a non-standard chamber and turbine layout.
Is shot blasting better than acid pickling for rebar?
Yes. Pickling produces chemical waste liquid and acid fumes, needing neutralization and wastewater permits. Shot blasting is purely physical. It removes rust and scale and creates a uniform profile, which pickling cannot do. This is why wire rod mills describe these lines as non-acid pickling descaling.
Does the machine need a dust collection system?
It is mandatory. A pulse-jet cartridge collector extracts and filters continuously. Emission stays at 120 mg/m³ or less, passing environmental acceptance.
Can it handle wire rod in coil form?
Whole coils are normally descaled in a batch coil blaster before drawing. Our continuous line processes straightened or drawn wire at speed. Tell us whether you run coil, straightened bar or drawn wire and we will recommend the right arrangement.
Can the same machine handle steel sections and plate?
Yes. Beyond rebar the machine handles round bar, wire rod, H-beam, angle steel, tube and plate, which is why fabricators specify it as general steel bar and section descaling equipment rather than a rebar-only unit.
