Choosing the Right Shot Blasting Machine for Your Workpiece

The correct shot blasting machine is determined by the workpiece and production process, not by machine size alone. A suitable system must clean the required surfaces, protect the part from damage and fit the target cycle time.

Start with the workpiece

Record the maximum and minimum dimensions, individual and batch weight, material, geometry and areas that must be cleaned. Long steel plate and sections usually suit a roller-conveyor line. Small castings and forgings can be processed efficiently in a tumble-belt or drum machine. Fragile, irregular or heavy parts may require a hook-type, monorail or rotary-table system.

Define the production target

  • Throughput: pieces, batches or tonnes per hour.
  • Surface result: required cleanliness, roughness and coverage.
  • Material flow: stand-alone loading or integration with fabrication and painting lines.
  • Automation: manual, semi-automatic or continuous handling.
  • Site constraints: available floor area, foundation, power, ventilation and environmental requirements.

Evaluate the complete system

Blast wheels are only one part of the solution. Abrasive recovery, separation, wear protection, dust collection, controls and maintenance access all affect long-term output and operating cost. Providing representative workpiece drawings and the coating specification allows the equipment configuration to be calculated around real production conditions.
